Ms.Meena Munshi, World Bank Task Leader for Gemidiriya among the Cheerful Children at the Ratmalwela Village Ceremony
Ms. Meena Munshi, the Task Leader of the World Bank for Gemidiriya Project, accompanied by Dr. Terrence Abeysekara, Co Task Leader, World Bank, Colombo, joined the community of Rathmalwela Village in Angunakolapelessa of the Hambantota District at the opening of the Village Multi Purpose Center built by the community.
The center will house the Gemidiriya People’s Company Office, the Village Savings and Credit Organization of the Company, a sales center to market village products and a village information and communication center with telephone, fax, photocopying and computer facilities.
Culture first, by the young village dancers
The village youth have a group performing cultural activity in events of celebration. The group ceremoniously ushered in the visiting World Bank Team, the leaders of the Local Authorities (Pradeshiya Sabha) and other invitees to the center.
A villager who donated the land to the People’s Company from his private property to construct the center was honored by the community at the ceremony. Everybody was hopeful of the benefits expected from the center which is the first major output of the Ratmalwela Village People’s Company.
The quality of workmanship of the building was found to be very high. All the woodwork including the doors and windows was done by a highly skilled village youth. It was the women and the youth of the village that took the lead in construction work.

Ms. Meena Munshi, with her motherly gesture, felt it hard to leave the place surrounded by the cheerful children who wanted her to stay with them not wanting her to leave and prompting her to talk to them more and more. |
