Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa reviews Gemidiriya progress
President Mahinda Rajapaksa while appreciating the progress of the Gemidiriya Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Project (GCDLIP) asked the officials to share the experience of Gemidiriya with other rural development programs of the government. President Rajapaksa made these comments after reviewing the progress of the Gemidiriya project recently. The Kebillegama water supply project, which is one of the most successful stories of Gemidiriya, was highly appreciated by the President who directed to show the presentation to all other villages.
The presentation was made at a progress review meeting of the Ministry of Rural Livelihood Development (MRLD), which was attended by the Minister Jagath Pushpakumara and ministry officials, held at the Temple Trees, the official residence of the President. The Gemidiriya presentation was made by Project Director Dr. Gamini Batuwitage and the officials.
President Rajapaksa identified the common features in the Gemidiriya project and Gama Naguma rural development program. Gama Neguma is the main rural development program initiated recently under Mahinda Chintana policies of the President.
The President especially wanted to share the Kebillegama water project experience with other water projects that operate in the country. He recognized the project as a simple, low cost model with the advantage of community participation in the maintenance of the system. President instructed to introduce the model to other projects that have faced maintenance problems.
